In May 1996 we did a major market tour of New York. It was very striking to us how poor the produce was compared to the San Francisco Bay Area – the only red chillies we could find were pathetic in their misery.

New York City – The Bronx

These two markets were highly recommended by email. Both carry a line of very nice sweets from "O" Thai Desserts, 2371 Fish Ave, Bronx.

Neighborhood Oriental Market 229 East Kingsbridge Road The Bronx, NY 718-365-9038	This is the place that sometimes has fresh krachai (or gkrachai, or "rhizome"), lots of other hard to find produce and dry goods.
Battambang Market 2654 Valentine Ave The Bronx, NY 718-733-5282	I think the owners are Cambodian (as the name would suggest), also lots of Vietnamese items but lots of nice produce and dry goods for Thai cooking as well.

New York City – Manhattan

There are any number of markets in Chinatown that are fairly good. There is only one market we highly recommend (see below) but as they do not sell fresh produce or fish, you will need buy those items at one of the nearby markets.

An excellent market. Nearly all of Kasma's favorite brands, including her two preferred brands of fish sauce – Tra Chang ("Scales") and Golden Boy. Highly Recommended.
