Here’s a photo of three appealing Hmong children taken during a recent trip by Kasma at a village on the way from Mae Hong Son to Bahn Rak Thai in the north of Thailand. We seem to be doing lots of pictures of Thai people latel.

Hmong Vendor in Hua Hin

This is a picture of young Hmong woman and her baby taken on the main highway in Hua Hin, on the way down south.

In looking over all my Wednesday photos I realize I’ve sadly neglected pictures of what is really my favorite part of Thailand – the Thai people. There is a reason that Thailand is sometimes called “The Land of Smiles.” Often, while going through a market or even just on the street, from out of nowhere your own smile is often mirrored back in a Thai smile that makes your day.

Since Hmong villages are pretty much exclusively in the north, this woman is a transplant out of economic necessity: she has come here to set up a stall and sell goods to tourists. It’s a fairly common Thai story, not just for the Hmong but also for uncounted Thais from northeast Thailand (Isaan): having to leave the safe confines of village and home in order to survive. Nonetheless, what a beautiful smile!

Hmong Girl in Mae Hong Son

Kasma took this picture of a young Hmong girl in January and this young girl is dressed up in her New Year’s finery. (The Hmong celebrate their New Year according to the lunar calendar).

Recently looking at the Index of Wednesday Photos I realized that I’ve not really posted enough pictures of the people of Thailand, perhaps the best thing about the country. Every year Kasma takes her small-group trips to several hill-tribe villages, choosing villages that are not 100% dependent on tourism.

This is a photo of a Hmong woman grilling soul sausage (a subject dear to my heart!) at a Hmong New Year’s celebration in 2003 in a village north of Chiang Mai.

The other day I was musing on the rise of digital cameras leading to the nearly total eclipse of film cameras and waxing a bit nostalgic. As recently as 2003 Kasma and I were still shooting slides and spending several hundred dollars a year on slide film, developing and printing pictures. Now we’re 100% digital. Some days I fantasize about digitizing at least some of the approximately 20,000 slides we have. One of these days. Perhaps.

This picture is posted here In honor of those days gone past, The camera was a Nikon N80, long may it rest in peace!

Here’s another Sausage Vendor (in Ayuthaya).

Everyone in Thailand loves children and the Hmong are no exception. Kasma took this picture up North of Chiang Mai on one of her trips.

Hmong Father & Son

One year Kasma and I took a trip up to the Mae Sa Valley in-between two of her trips to attend the Hmong New Year’s celebration, which is celebrated according to the lunar calendar. All the Hmong villages in the area (at that time I believe there were eight) come together to one village, everyone dressed up in their very best attire.

Both men and women Hmong love children. I like this picture of father and son, both dressed up in all their finery.
