I've eaten salted crab in Som Dtam in Thailand many times and never gotten sick. I think your friend's concern, though, might stem from the fact that the crab is raw. There could be the possibility of the raw crabs sitting outside of refrigeration for some time before being used. On the other hand, they are heavily salted so I would think theoretically that would take care of any bacteria. Perhaps not a bad recommendation for Westerners in Thailand, though.

HI there.

I travel a lot to Thailand where I often see street vendors making the famous Som Tam around the streets of Bangkok. I have often wondered what the little crabs they break apart and throw in are. I was about to try some recently when a kind Thai lady told me not to take the Som Tam with crab, as she said as a Westerner it would probably make me sick. ? Any comments or advice? IS it because our constitution is not used to such strong flavours or is there a risk of becoming ill from the crab itself. She told me that even as a Thai she had become sick from this several times.
Many Thanks
